Off-Grid How-To Guides

Step-by-step guides for building, maintaining, and thriving in an off-grid lifestyle. Start with the essentials below.

These guides come from four years of full-time off-grid living on a 14-acre homestead in rural Tennessee. The goal isn’t to give you advice you can find anywhere — it’s to give you the real numbers: watt-hours, gallons per day, actual cost breakdowns, and the mistakes that don’t get mentioned until after you’ve already made them.

Every guide includes the calculations behind the recommendation. When we say “a 400W system is enough for a small cabin,” we show you the math so you can adjust it for your own situation. Off-grid systems aren’t one-size-fits-all — generic advice is the reason so many first builds end up dangerously undersized or wastefully over-engineered.

If you’re new to off-grid living, start with The Complete Beginner’s Guide and then the Power Audit Guide. These two will save you from the most common expensive mistakes.

How to Use These Guides

The 12 guides here cover the four core systems of off-grid independence: solar power, water, food production and preservation, and shelter and building. They’re designed to be used together, because off-grid systems interact in ways that single-topic guides miss.

A few things worth knowing before you start:

If you’re choosing equipment for any of these systems, the reviews section covers the gear we’ve tested on this homestead. The guides give you the system design; the reviews help you pick the hardware.
